Scholar of Riyadha Mosque

He was the 4th son of Sayyid Ahmad Badawy.His mother was Ruqiyyah Bint Abdulrahman Al-Marzuuqiyah. He was born in Lamu in 1923 and was brought up by his parents,his uncle Sheikh Fadhil Khalifa Mansurin and later by his step father Sayyid Muhammad Adnan Al-Ahdal.

Sayyid Hassan learnt the Qur’an under Al Habib Umar Al- Aideed. He then studied other Social sciences under:

  • Sayyid Ahmad Badawy(his father)
  • Sayyid Muhammad Adnan (his step father)
  • Sayyid Ali Badawy(his elder brother)
  • Sheikh Muhammad Bin Ali Al-Maawy
  • Shariff Said Bin Abdallah Al-Beidh
among others.

Sayyid Hassan also studied Islamic traditional medicine under his father Sayyid Ahmad Badawy and his cousin Shariff Said Al- Beidh and used his acquired skills to provide free treatment.

Sayyid Hassan being an offspring of Riyadha,started Propagating Islam & disseminating Knowledge at an early age. He provided lectures at the Riyadha mosque after Asr prayers as well as after Maghrib prayers together with his elder brother Sayyid Ali Badawy. With time,he had several classes in various mosques in Lamu including Raasil-Kheir and Sheikh Biladi mosques. He also held Qur’an translation classes at Pumwani mosque and later transferred them to Pwani mosque where they still go on to date.

After his elder brother Sayyid Abdulrahman Khitamy moved to Mombasa, Sayyid Hassan along with his younger brother Sayyid Alwy(Mzee Mwenye) took over the leadership at Madrasati Najaah. There he introduced several changes to the Madrasah among them being:

  1. He introduced a new syllabus in which other Islamic sciences were brought to light
  2. He introduced Arabic grammar
  3. He introduced Geography,History and Biology

After teaching in Najaah,he assisted his brother Sayyid Alwy (Mzee Mwenye) at Masjid Swafaa and later on started his own Madrasah in 1995 and named it Madrasatu Badru.

  • Sayyid Muhsin Bin Sayyid Ali Badawy

  • Sayyid Abdulqadir Bin Sayyid Ahmad Al-Ahdal

Like his elders,Sayyid Hassan travelled across East Africa with a mission to Propagate Islam and spread Knowledge.

Among Sayyid Hassan’s initiatives were:

  • He started the procession during the Maulid festival

  • He performed lectures to mark Hijri celebrations
  • He offered classes to the olderly and needy

Sayyid Hassan passed on at Lamu in 2007 and was buried at Mkomani Cemetery.
